The hubby arranged to have a truck load of manure delivered. A friend of ours picked it up and dropped his truck off so we could unload it. We spent the last parts of the daylight unloading it I spread a little of it and will finish spreading it tomorrow.

Spring is nearing

Spring is nearing and I’m sad that I’ve neglected this blog over the winter. I had good intentions to continue posting about my indoor gardening. Life took a turn and I never really got involved in my indoor attempts as much as I wanted to. For those of you that also follow my personal blog the reason is already known. For those of you that do not, my dad passed away a week before Christmas. I’ve recently gotten somewhat out of the deep pits of grief enough to start functioning again.

I’m looking forward to starting some seeds and getting the garden prepped over the next few weeks. I am hopeful that I will take tons of pictures and make this a much more active tumblr again!

Who says gardening has to end in the winter? Chili pepper plants are alive an well in the basement. As adult plants, they’ll hopefully bear ridiculous amounts of fruit early in the spring when they go back outdoors.

I know I’ve posted this in the past, but Alys Fowler is one of my favourite ladies. She taught me how to grow an avocado plant from the pit of the fruit and she shares my love of denim jumpers and she has red hair and forages for wild foods. Check out some of her books here. She’s so great.

Pulsatilla alpina ssp. apiifolia. It’s a taller and later blooming Pulsatilla. I’m not sure if it will grow well for me, but I’m more than happy to risk it. I bought seeds for this gem on Ebay, which is a great source for seed for rare and unusual plant varieties.

If you’ve never grown perennials or annuals from seed, you should consider it. It’s really the only way for a home gardener to get a large number of plants for massing without going bankrupt. If growing requirements and seed starting methods intimidate you, or if you don’t think you have space inside, try winter sowing them in milk jugs.
